The Center for Visual & Decision Informatics (CVDI) was established as a National Science Foundation Industry University Cooperative Research Center in 2012, starting with two universities and fewer than 10 companies. Today it is six universities strong and works with 21 industry members. In February the center was awarded advancement into Phase II by the foundation, which funds projects in five-year cycles. The partnerships are international, as the schools represent Louisiana, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia and Finland. The connection to Finland strengthened Wednesday as Tieto US, a company headquartered in Espoo, Finland, signed a membership agreement to join the CVDI and work directly with universities on big data solutions. Tieto US joins as an industry member working with UL Lafayette researchers. Tieto-Finland already is a member working directly with researchers at Tampere University of Technology.
